About Mount Fanjing

Mount Fanjing is the newest Chinese mountain to capture the global imagination. Its Red Cloud Golden Summit — a 100-meter rock spire split by a narrow crack, with a Buddhist temple on each side connected by a stone bridge — looks like it was designed for Instagram, but Buddhist monks built it in the Ming Dynasty. The mountain sits in Guizhou province, one of China’s poorest regions, which kept it off international radar until UNESCO designation in 2018. Today it draws both pilgrims who climb 8,888 steps to the summit and photographers chasing the moment when red clouds envelop the golden peak at sunrise.

How to Get There

High-speed train to Tongren Station (4h from Guiyang, 5h from Changsha, 7h from Guangzhou). From Tongren, buses to Fanjingshan take 1.5 hours. The nearest airport is Tongren Fenghuang Airport (TEN) with flights from Guiyang, Beijing, and Shanghai. Stay in the village at the mountain base or in Tongren city. Cable car access from the east gate is the easiest route to the summit area.
