The Heavenly Mountains along the ancient Silk Road
About Tianshan Mountains
The Tianshan (Celestial Mountains) stretch 2,500 kilometers across Central Asia, forming one of the world's great mountain ranges and the defining geographic feature of China's Xinjiang Province. At their heart, approximately 110 kilometers east of Urumqi, lies Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) — a crescent of impossibly blue water at 1,980 meters, surrounded by snow-capped peaks rising to 5,445 meters at Bogda Peak. This is the landscape that has defined the Silk Road imagination for two millennia: alpine meadows carpeted with wildflowers in summer, dense spruce forests, glacier-fed streams, and Kazakh herders moving their yurts and livestock with the seasons. The Tianshan were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 for their exceptional natural beauty and biodiversity — the range hosts over 1,800 plant species, snow leopards, ibex, and golden eagles. For visitors, the experience centers on Heavenly Lake, accessible by road from Urumqi in about 1.5 hours. A boardwalk circles the lake (approximately 12 kilometers, 4-5 hours), offering constantly changing views of Bogda Peak reflected in the water. In summer (June-September), temperatures at the lake hover around a pleasant 15-25 C, while Urumqi swelters below at 30-40 C. The Kazakh cultural experience is part of the visit — you can stay in a yurt, drink fermented mare's milk, and eat hand-pulled noodles. Winter transforms the lake into a frozen expanse surrounded by snow — a completely different, nearly empty landscape. This is mountain tourism at a grand, continental scale, far from the stone-step pilgrimage routes of eastern China.

When to Go
June-September is the only full-access season. June-July brings the famous alpine wildflower bloom on the grasslands below the peaks, with temperatures 15-25 C at Tianchi (Heavenly Lake, 1,900m) and cooler above. August offers the warmest lake swimming and the best road conditions for the higher passes. September brings autumn gold on the larches around the lake and the clearest views of Bogda Peak (5,445m), with daytime temperatures 10-20 C — the best month for photography. October-early November: the lake area stays accessible until snow closes the upper roads, and golden aspens along the rivers are stunning. Winter (November-March) closes most of the scenic area but opens a ski resort at the lower slopes. Late spring (May) is transitional — snow patches remain, roads may close briefly. Note: Xinjiang is 2 hours behind Beijing time; plan for late sunsets and early breakfasts.
How to Get There
By Air: Fly to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport (URC) — direct flights from Beijing (4h), Shanghai (5.5h), Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xi'an, plus international connections. From the airport, Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is 1.5-2 hours by road (70km). By Road: From Urumqi, the direct highway to Tianchi is well-maintained; public buses leave from the Northern Suburb Bus Station (2h, CNY 40-50), or hire a car for flexibility (CNY 300-400 round trip). Inside the scenic area: shuttle buses climb from the gate to the lakeshore (30 min), and a further cable car or footpath climbs to the upper viewpoints of Bogda Peak. Distances in Xinjiang are vast — a full loop of the Tianshan range (Urumqi to Korla to Kashgar) takes 10+ days overland. Entry Fee: Tianchi CNY 155 (includes shuttle); cable car extra (CNY 220 round trip).
